You were running, stepped off a curb and yow! Your ankle twisted as you fell. You know you need treatment, but who
should you see for
What is an ankle sprain?
It's an extremely common injury to the lower extremities, usually occurring when a person walks, runs, or plays sports. When the foot encounters an uneven or slippery surface, it can experience a twisting motion, placing excessive forces on the ligaments which hold the bones and joints of the ankle.
Injury may involve overstretching that connective tissue or even partially or completely tearing it, says the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. Treatment is essential to ensure ankle stability over time.
Symptoms and treatment
Symptoms of an ankle sprain include:
- Difficulty bearing weight
- Pain
- Swelling
- Bruising
- Redness
- Stiffness
Immediate intervention includes a tried and true first aid strategy: RICE. This stands for rest, ice, compression
(with an elastic bandage), and elevation (above heart level) to reduce swelling and pain. Ibuprofen and
acetaminophen help with the sometimes considerable discomfort.
But, of course, as with any traumatic injury, medical intervention is important. Call Avon Podiatry Associates right
away for advice and a same-day appointment as necessary. When you come to the office, your Avon podiatrist will
examine your ankle, check how you walk and X-ray the foot and ankle. He'll also ask you about your symptoms and
level of pain.
For most ankle sprains, treatment is simple. Following up on the RICE protocol, Dr. Grayson may advise physical
therapy as tolerated to keep the joint mobile and functional as it heals. Sometimes a severe sprain requires surgery
to repair the ligaments and ensure functionality. Dr. Grayson is a board-certified foot and ankle surgeon and uses
surgery to avoid immobility and loss of function.
