Are You Dealing With Heel Pain?

When you are dealing with heel pain, everyday activities like standing or walking can be difficult and even painful. Without treatment, heel pain could worsen over time or lead to additional problems. Dr. Richard Grayson, the board certified podiatrist at Avon Podiatry Associates in Avon, CT, treats heel pain.

Common Causes of Heel Pain

Heel pain can be the result of several different factors, such as overuse or a sports injury. Some causes of heel pain include:

  • Arthritis
  • An injury
  • Heel spurs
  • A stress fracture
  • Performing high impact activities
  • Wearing shoes without adequate support
  • Structural issues (high arches or flat feet)
  • An irregular gait
  • Achilles tendinitis
  • Plantar Fasciitis

One of the most common causes of heel pain is a condition called plantar fasciitis, in which pain is felt at the bottom of the heel and sometimes along the arches, as well. The condition develops as a result of inflammation of the plantar fascia tissues that run along the bottom of the feet. These tissues provide shock absorption for the feet, but can become irritated and inflamed due to constant pressure, repeated stretching, and excessive wear and tear.

Treatments for Heel Pain

Several options are available for treating heel pain. The appropriate treatment method depends on the cause of the pain and other factors. The experienced podiatrist at our office in Avon, CT, will diagnose the cause of your pain and develop a treatment plan tailored to your needs. Examples of the various treatments for heel pain include:

  • Custom orthotics
  • Physical therapy
  • Anti-inflammatory medications
  • Removable walking cast
  • Padding and strapping
  • Compression wraps
  • Night splints
  • Surgery

Individuals dealing with persistent heel pain could benefit from a treatment called Extracorporeal Pulse Activation Technology (EPAT) or shockwave therapy. This treatment is often used to treat heel pain caused by plantar fasciitis or Achilles tendinitis.

The non-invasive treatment works by gently delivering shock waves via a handheld device to areas with overworked and inflamed tissues. The shock waves stimulate healing of the affected tissues. Most patients need three 10-15 minute sessions over the course of a few weeks to achieve maximum results, but many patients experience diminished pain after the first session.
